The old Fifth Street bridge that connects downtown Augusta, GA with North Augusta, SC continues to be used for local traffic but has been replaced by a newer, more modern bridge for most traffic. Many locals have likely driven over the bridge without realising that at both sides of the river are plaques to Confederate President Jefferson Davis (I was born and raised in the area and was unaware of the memorial until just recently). The plaques date from 1931 and were put in place by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) , one of countless monuments and memorials across Dixie the Southern heritage group has erected over the years. The UDC plaques on the South Carolina side of the bridge are nearly covered by unchecked vegetation. The Jefferson Davis Memorial Bridge (a name which is not commonly used any longer – the street signs refer to it as “Fifth Street Bridge”) is one of those little-known treasures of the South’s history and heritage.
